Vastu kitchen design — direction, layout, and remedies
Vastu-compliant kitchen design brings good health, prosperity, and family harmony. This guide covers ideal direction, stove-sink placement, colours, and remedies if your kitchen cannot meet ideal Vastu.
Ideal direction — South-East (Agni kona)
South-east corner of the house is the Agni kona — fire zone, associated with energy, transformation, and nourishment. Ideal for the kitchen because cooking = transformation via fire.
Alternative directions (if SE unavailable)
- North-west (Vayu kona): second best. Associated with wind, supports ventilation.
- East: acceptable, especially for the stove
- Avoid: north-east (water zone, conflicts with fire), north (Kuber — wealth area), centre of the house
Stove placement
- Stove should be in the south-east corner of the kitchen
- Cook facing east (positive energy from sunrise)
- Never face south while cooking (Yama direction, negative)
- Stove not directly opposite the main door to kitchen
- Gap between stove and sink (fire and water should not touch — minimum 3 feet, ideally more)
- Stove not under a beam or storage cabinet
Sink / water placement
- Sink in the north-east of the kitchen — water zone
- Sink should not be directly facing the stove
- Drinking water storage in the north-east corner
- RO / water purifier in the north or north-east
Fridge placement
- South-west or west is ideal
- Alternative: north-west
- Avoid: north-east (conflicts with water zone)
Storage placement
- Tall units / larders: south-west (heavier mass preferred there)
- Everyday grains / pulses storage: north-west
- Overhead cabinets: north or north-west
- Spice cabinet near stove (south-east)
Colours for kitchen
- Walls: light colours. Yellow, orange, green, white, light brown — energising and warm
- Avoid: black, dark blue, dark red (too much fire energy)
- Cabinet colour: wood tones or light laminate
- Countertop: light granite, quartz, or marble (avoid black or very dark colours)
Lighting
- Bright task lighting over stove and counter
- Warm LED for ambient light
- Natural light from east-facing window if possible
- Exhaust fan on north or east wall (not south — south is fire direction)
Vastu dos and donts
Do
- Face east while cooking
- Keep kitchen clean and clutter-free
- Have good ventilation (chimney + exhaust)
- Maintain fresh air flow
- Store clean utensils in north / east
- Use copper / brass utensils where possible
Don’t
- Don’t place stove in north-east (water zone)
- Don’t place stove and sink side by side (fire-water conflict)
- Don’t have kitchen under a toilet
- Don’t face south while cooking
- Don’t store broken utensils
- Don’t keep empty / dirty vessels overnight
- Don’t place waste bin in north-east
Remedies if kitchen Vastu is not ideal
If kitchen is in wrong direction
You cannot always move the kitchen (rental flats, built-up construction). Remedies:
- Place a small agni / diya in the south-east corner of the kitchen (daily ritual)
- Use warm / red-yellow tones on walls to compensate for north direction
- Keep kitchen spotlessly clean — cleanliness overrides direction per many Vastu consultants
- Place a red-orange tinted crystal / quartz in the south-east
- Place copper or brass elements prominently (pot, bell)
If stove cannot be in SE corner
- Rotate stove to face east (cooking direction matters more than placement for many consultants)
- Place a small brass diya / lamp that stays lit during cooking
If sink is near stove
- Install a tall separator (countertop riser, backsplash tile ridge) between them
- Place a small brass / copper container of water ritual between them
Modern Vastu kitchen layouts
L-shape Vastu kitchen
Stove on south wall (south-east corner), sink on north wall (north-east corner), fridge on west. Works well in 9×8 ft kitchens.
U-shape Vastu kitchen
Stove at the south-east corner of the U, sink at the north-east, fridge on the west side of the U. Minimum 10×10 ft for proper U-shape Vastu compliance.
Straight Vastu kitchen
Hardest to Vastu-align due to single-wall constraint. Place stove on south-east end, sink on north-east end. Long counter between them acts as natural separator.

Vastu kitchen — direction & layout reference
Kitchen Vastu has 4 critical decisions: kitchen direction, stove direction, sink position, water-storage direction. Below is the reference table our designers use, plus how to handle the common case where Vastu-ideal placement is impossible due to flat layout.
Kitchen Vastu reference — direction by element
Each kitchen element with its ideal direction, alternative, and what to do if neither is possible.
| Element | Ideal | Acceptable alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Kitchen location (room) | South-East (Agneya) | South or East |
| Stove / hob | East wall, cook faces East | SE corner, facing E |
| Sink / water tap | North-East corner | North wall |
| Refrigerator | South-West corner | South or West wall |
| Drinking water storage | North-East | North wall |
| Window | East wall (sunrise) | Above sink (any direction) |
| Cooking gas cylinder | South-East corner | SE wall, not under stove |
| Microwave / appliances | South-East | South wall |
| Pooja shelf in kitchen | East wall above eye level | North-East corner |
Six Vastu kitchen rules with practical workarounds
Stove must not face North
North-facing stove creates wealth-blocking energy per Vastu. If unavoidable, install a mirror behind to reflect East energy.
Sink and stove separation
Fire (stove) and water (sink) should not be on the same wall directly adjacent. Minimum 3 ft gap; ideally on opposite walls.
Black colour avoided
Vastu prefers light + warm colours (cream, light yellow, peach). Avoid dark grey, black, dark navy as dominant colour.
Storage near ceiling
Heavy items in lower cabinets, lighter items at eye level, decorative + occasional items in upper cabinets. Inverted weight = bad luck per Vastu.
No mirror reflecting stove
Mirror facing the stove (cooking flame) considered bad luck. Position mirror to reflect sink + windows instead.
Plants in NE corner
Small live plants (tulsi, money plant) in NE corner amplify positive energy. Avoid thorny + dead plants.
Frequently asked
What if my kitchen is not in the SE corner?
Use compensatory measures: place stove on East wall (cook facing East), keep SE corner clear of clutter, install a small red lamp or Agni representation in SE. Modern Vastu accepts these workarounds.
Can the gas cylinder be inside the kitchen?
Yes if SE corner placement is followed + adequate ventilation. Per gas safety regulations, cylinder area must have window/exhaust within 6 ft. Both Vastu and safety rules align here.
Is open kitchen Vastu-compliant?
Yes if proper SE placement maintained + visual separation (slim partition, breakfast counter) between kitchen and living. Open kitchens facing North or NW go against Vastu — use a half-wall or arch to define.
Should kitchen and bathroom share a wall?
Vastu strongly advises against it. If unavoidable (compact flats), use thick double-wall + ensure bathroom door does not directly face kitchen entrance. Modern compromise; many architects accept this with mitigation.
