Vastu pooja room design — direction, size, decor ideas
The pooja room is the spiritual heart of an Indian home. Vastu-compliant pooja room design ensures positive energy flow, peace, and prosperity. This guide covers direction, size, placement, and decor ideas for pooja rooms in Greater Noida / Noida flats and villas.
Ideal direction — North-east (Ishanya)
North-east corner of the house is the most auspicious for pooja rooms per Vastu Shastra. It combines the energies of North (Kuber / wealth) and East (sunrise / positive energy). If dedicated pooja room is not possible, a north-east shelf or niche serves the purpose.
Alternative directions (if northeast unavailable)
- East: next best option. Associated with Surya, morning light.
- North: acceptable. Kuber direction.
- Avoid: south (Yama direction), south-west, or under staircase.
Ideal size
- Small flat: 2×2 ft niche or wall shelf minimum
- Standard 2BHK / 3BHK: 3×3 ft to 4×4 ft dedicated small room
- Villa: 5×5 ft to 6×6 ft dedicated room with ventilation
Idol placement
- Idols should face west (devotee faces east during pooja)
- Place idols on a raised platform / stand, not directly on floor
- Separate distance between deities (especially Shiva and Ganesha per traditional)
- Photos and idols at eye level when seated
- Avoid placing idols in shadow zones
Colour and decor
- Walls: white, light yellow, cream, soft blue — calming tones
- Avoid: dark colours, black, bright red
- Lighting: warm yellow LED or traditional diyas. Avoid harsh white LED.
- Flooring: marble (white or light) or premium vitrified, keep clean always
- Ceiling: false ceiling with dome pattern or jaali detail is auspicious
Materials
- Marble or stone backdrop for idols
- CNC-cut wooden or MDF jaali panels for doors / partitions
- Granite or marble platform for idols
- Brass or copper bells
- Solid-wood door to pooja room (avoid glass, not recommended Vastu)
Lighting
- Warm LED strip lighting behind idol backdrop
- Focused LED downlights on idols
- Traditional brass or silver-finish wall-mounted lamps
- Natural light from east-facing window if possible
Storage for pooja items
- Cabinets for storing brass utensils, lamps, prayer books
- Shelf for flowers, incense, oil

Vastu pooja room — direction & layout reference
Pooja room placement is the most-asked Vastu question we receive. Below is the practical reference table — exact direction, layout do/don’t, size guidelines — for Greater Noida flats and villas.
Vastu pooja room — direction reference
Each direction with its Vastu rating, suitability, and what to do if you cannot use the ideal NE corner.
| Direction | Vastu rating | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| North-East (NE / Ishan) | Best | Highest spiritual energy, morning sun |
| East | Very good | Acceptable if NE unavailable |
| North | Good | Use only if NE+E both unavailable |
| Centre (Brahmasthan) | Acceptable with caveats | Only as walk-in temple room, not closet |
| West | Avoid if possible | Symbolises decline; use only as last resort |
| South | Strongly avoid | Yama direction; bad spiritual flow |
| South-West (SW) | Worst | Negative energy zone |
| Under staircase | Strongly avoid | Vastu specifically prohibits |
Six pooja room design do/don’ts (Vastu-aligned)
Floor 6-9 inches above main floor
Symbolic elevation; creates spatial separation from regular living area.
Door opens inward, faces East
Devotee enters facing East. Two-shutter doors (60-40 split) traditional.
No mirrors inside pooja room
Reflective surfaces disrupt spiritual focus. No mirrors on any inside wall.
Light wood / marble for finish
Sandalwood, teak, or white marble. Avoid dark woods (rosewood, walnut) and glossy laminates.
Storage below at ground level only
Books, vessels, samagri stored in lower units. Idols never above eye level looking down.
No bathroom on adjacent wall
Bathroom on the shared wall = inauspicious. If unavoidable, install thick waterproof partition.
Frequently asked
Where should the pooja room be in a 2BHK flat?
Ideal: NE corner of the living room or kitchen (small puja shelf works in compact 2BHKs). If no NE space, the East wall of master bedroom is acceptable. Avoid bedroom-walled, avoid under-stairs, avoid bathroom-adjacent.
Can I use a closet as pooja room?
Acceptable in compact flats if proper Vastu rules followed: door faces East, idol faces East-facing devotee, no shoes near, no leather bags inside, 6-inch raised floor. Walk-in pooja room is preferred when space allows.
What is the correct direction to face while praying?
East-facing (devotee faces East). Idol can face East or West (devotee will then face West-or-East accordingly). North-facing is acceptable second choice. Never face South while praying — Vastu marks this as Yama direction.
Is it OK to have pooja room next to washroom?
Vastu strongly advises against it. If unavoidable (small flats), install a thick double-wall with waterproofing membrane between them. Mark the pooja room door clearly. Modern compromise; not ideal but liveable.
