Vastu pooja room design — direction, size, decor ideas
The pooja room is the spiritual heart of an Indian home. Vastu-compliant pooja room design ensures positive energy flow, peace, and prosperity. This guide covers direction, size, placement, and decor ideas for pooja rooms in Greater Noida / Noida flats and villas.
Ideal direction — North-east (Ishanya)
North-east corner of the house is the most auspicious for pooja rooms per Vastu Shastra. It combines the energies of North (Kuber / wealth) and East (sunrise / positive energy). If dedicated pooja room is not possible, a north-east shelf or niche serves the purpose.
Alternative directions (if northeast unavailable)
- East: next best option. Associated with Surya, morning light.
- North: acceptable. Kuber direction.
- Avoid: south (Yama direction), south-west, or under staircase.
Ideal size
- Small flat: 2×2 ft niche or wall shelf minimum
- Standard 2BHK / 3BHK: 3×3 ft to 4×4 ft dedicated small room
- Villa: 5×5 ft to 6×6 ft dedicated room with ventilation
Idol placement
- Idols should face west (devotee faces east during pooja)
- Place idols on a raised platform / stand, not directly on floor
- Separate distance between deities (especially Shiva and Ganesha per traditional)
- Photos and idols at eye level when seated
- Avoid placing idols in shadow zones
Colour and decor
- Walls: white, light yellow, cream, soft blue — calming tones
- Avoid: dark colours, black, bright red
- Lighting: warm yellow LED or traditional diyas. Avoid harsh white LED.
- Flooring: marble (white or light) or premium vitrified, keep clean always
- Ceiling: false ceiling with dome pattern or jaali detail is auspicious

- Marble or stone backdrop for idols
- CNC-cut wooden or MDF jaali panels for doors / partitions
