Which Door Is Best for Your Home: KP, WPC, Flush or Solid Wood?

Choosing a door sounds like a small decision. Then you visit a shop and hear terms like KP door, WPC door, flush door, teak door – and the choice becomes confusing. This guide explains each type in plain language, so you can decide which door is best for your home, room by room, without overspending.

Door types explained in plain language

KP door (Kerala Pine door)

A KP door is made from softwood planks joined together with battens and rails. It is one of the oldest and cheapest door types used in Indian homes. It looks like traditional wood and can be painted or polished. It is light, easy to repair, and fine for bedrooms, stores and puja rooms. Its weak point is moisture – it can swell if it stays wet, and it needs regular termite treatment.

Flush door

A flush door has a frame made of rails and styles, filled with a solid or hollow core, and covered on both sides with plywood or hardboard faces. The surface is flat and smooth. It is the most common door in new flats and independent houses today. A good flush door with a waterproof grade core works well inside the home. A cheap one can be hollow, heavy-filled with scraps, or made from non-waterproof ply.

WPC door

WPC stands for wood plastic composite. It is a mix of wood fibre and plastic, moulded into boards. WPC doors do not rot, do not swell in water, and termites do not eat them. They are a good choice for bathrooms, kitchens and any wall that faces dampness. The look is plain, so many people add a laminate or veneer on top. WPC is slightly more expensive than a basic flush door but lasts longer in wet areas.

Solid wood door

Solid wood doors are made from teak, deodar, sal or other hardwood. They are strong, heavy and look rich. Teak is the best of the lot for a main entrance door – it resists termites naturally and can be polished again and again over decades. Solid wood costs the most, and it needs some care: polish every few years, and protection from direct rain. A well-made teak door can outlast the house itself.

Price comparison per door, installed

Door prices change with wood rates, city and brand, so treat these as a fair comparison of relative cost, not an exact quotation. For your own home, our team gives a rate after a site visit.

Door typeRough cost levelBest used for
KP doorLowestBedrooms, stores, puja room
Flush door (waterproof core)Low to mediumBedrooms, kitchen, most internal doors
WPC doorMediumBathrooms, kitchen, damp walls
Solid wood / teak doorHighestMain entrance, pooja unit fronts

A simple rule that works for most homes: spend on the main door, save on inner doors. A teak or good solid wood entrance door gives security and looks. Inside, waterproof flush doors and WPC in wet areas give good service at a much lower cost. If you are building a full house, our home construction cost calculator gives an item-by-item estimate, and doors appear as a separate line so you can see the share of your budget.

Termite and moisture resistance comparison

  • KP door: Weak against both. Needs anti-termite treatment at the time of fixing and every few years after.
  • Flush door: Depends fully on the core and ply grade. Waterproof-grade flush doors handle kitchen steam well. Cheaper grades swell at the bottom edge if water sits on the floor.
  • WPC door: Best here. Termites cannot eat it and water does not swell it. This is why it suits bathrooms.
  • Solid wood: Teak resists termites naturally and handles weather well. Softer woods like deodar or mixed hardwood need treatment and polish.

One honest note: an expensive teak door fixed with the wrong frame, or with the bottom edge resting on a wet floor, will still give trouble. Workmanship matters as much as material.

Best doors for bathrooms and kitchens

For bathrooms, WPC is the clear winner. Water splashes, steam and floor mopping destroy ordinary wooden doors from the bottom up. A WPC door frame and shutter both survive this. If budget is tight, a waterproof-grade flush door with the bottom edge sealed well is an acceptable second choice, but expect a shorter life than WPC.

For kitchens, a waterproof flush door is usually enough, because the door does not get direct water like a bathroom door. WPC is only needed if the door sits next to the sink or a wet work area.

If you are redoing a bathroom completely, not just the door, our washroom renovation cost calculator lists every work item – waterproofing, tiles, plumbing, electricals – so you can plan the door cost along with everything else.

Best doors for main entrance security

The main door carries two jobs: security and looks. For this, solid wood – teak if budget allows – is the best choice. It is thick, heavy, holds hinges and locks firmly, and can take a multi-point locking system. A good flush door with a strong frame and quality mortise lock is acceptable in flats, but for an independent house in Greater Noida or along the Yamuna Expressway, a solid wood door with a safety grill or a secondary steel door gives better peace of mind.

Do not forget the frame. A heavy teak shutter on a weak frame is like a strong lock on a thin door. Spend on a hardwood or WPC frame that is anchored properly into the masonry with holdfasts, not just nails.

Lifespan and maintenance needs

  • KP door: Around 10 to 15 years with care. Paint every 3 to 4 years. Anti-termite treatment regularly.
  • Flush door: 15 years or more if the core is waterproof grade. Repaint or laminate change as needed.
  • WPC door: Long life in wet areas. Almost no maintenance – just wipe and clean.
  • Solid wood: Decades. Teak doors in old Indian houses still work after 40 or 50 years. Polish every 5 to 7 years keeps them looking new.

Whichever door you pick, keep water from standing at the bottom edge. That single habit extends door life more than any treatment.

Common quality frauds in flush doors

Flush doors are where most cheating happens, because you cannot see inside the shutter. Watch out for these:

  • Hollow or paper-core doors sold as solid core. Knock on the door at several points. A solid core sounds dull and even; a hollow one sounds like a drum at some spots.
  • Non-waterproof ply faces used in bathrooms. Ask for the ISI-grade waterproof marking on the face ply.
  • Underweight shutters. A proper solid core flush door of standard size is heavy. If one person lifts it easily, the core is suspect.
  • Weight filled with scrap or sand to fake heaviness. Buy from a known supplier or ask your contractor to check the brand and grade on the invoice.
  • Termite-infested timber hidden under fresh paint in “reused” doors. Old doors sold as new are common in some markets.

The safest protection is simple: buy doors with the grade printed on the face, keep the invoice, and let your contractor check each shutter before it is hung.

A quick checklist before you order doors

  • Decide door type for each room: main, bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen, balcony.
  • Check the core grade and waterproof marking on every flush door.
  • Choose WPC for every bathroom, not just one.
  • Spend extra on the main door frame, not only the shutter.
  • Confirm anti-termite treatment for all wooden frames.
  • Check hinge quality – two good hinges outlast four cheap ones.
  • Keep 10 mm clearance at the bottom of bathroom doors for water and airflow.
  • Keep the invoice with grade details for future claims.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which door is best for the main entrance?+

Solid wood, preferably teak, is the best choice for the main entrance. It is strong, secure, and holds heavy locks and hinges well. Pair it with a strong hardwood frame fixed properly into the wall.

Which door is best for bathrooms?+

A WPC door is best for bathrooms. Water and steam do not damage it, and termites do not attack it. A waterproof-grade flush door is a cheaper option, but it will not last as long in a wet bathroom.

Are flush doors good quality?+

Yes, if you buy the right grade. A solid-core waterproof flush door from a known maker works well for 15 years or more indoors. The problem is cheap flush doors with hollow or scrap-filled cores. Check the grade marking and weight before buying.

Is a WPC door stronger than wood?+

WPC is not stronger than solid hardwood, but it is more durable in wet conditions. It will not rot, swell or get eaten by termites. For a main entrance where strength matters, solid wood is better. For bathrooms and kitchens, WPC is better.
