A wet bathroom floor is the most common place for slips at home. Small children and elderly parents are at the highest risk. Choosing the right floor tile is not only about looks. It is about safety first, then cleaning, then appearance. This guide explains the best tiles for bathroom floor use in plain words, so you can choose with confidence.
Why glossy tiles are dangerous in bathrooms
Glossy tiles look beautiful in a showroom. Under the lights, they shine like a mirror. But that shine comes from a smooth, polished surface. When water sits on a smooth surface, it creates a thin film. Your foot cannot grip that film. One wrong step and you slide.
In bedrooms and living rooms, glossy tiles are fine. The floor stays dry there. In a bathroom, water falls on the floor every single day – from the shower, from wet feet, from a dripping bucket. Glossy tiles become like ice when wet.
Many homes in Greater Noida have glossy tiles in bathrooms because that is what the builder supplied, or because the shopkeeper showed a shiny sample first. If your bathroom floor is glossy today, be extra careful until you change it. Keep a mat near the shower and outside the bathroom door.
Anti-skid vs matte vs textured tiles explained
These three words are used loosely in tile shops. Here is what they actually mean:
Anti-skid tiles
These tiles have small bumps, ridges or a grainy finish on the surface. The roughness gives your foot something to hold on to, even when the tile is wet. Anti-skid tiles are the safest option for the shower area and the main bathroom floor. The downside is that dirt can sit in the texture, so they need a little more scrubbing than smooth tiles.
Matte tiles
Matte tiles have no shine, but their surface is finer than anti-skid tiles. They are less slippery than glossy tiles but more slippery than a proper anti-skid tile. Matte tiles are a good middle choice for dry and semi-dry areas, like the area near the washbasin or a powder room that is used by guests. They are also easier to clean than anti-skid tiles.
Textured tiles
Textured tiles have a strong, visible pattern on the surface – like stone, wood grain or a woven look. They give good grip because the texture breaks the water film. They are commonly used on bathroom floors and on outdoor balconies. Cleaning takes slightly more effort than a flat matte tile, but a soft brush handles it.
A simple rule: the rougher the surface feels under your palm, the better the grip when wet. If a shopkeeper only says “it is non-slip” but the surface feels glassy, it is not non-slip.
Understanding slip rating (R-value)
Tile makers test tiles for slipperiness and give them a rating called the R-value. “R” stands for ramp test. The scale runs from R9 to R13. Higher the number, better the grip.
| R-value | Grip level | Where it suits an Indian home |
|---|---|---|
| R9 | Low grip | Dry areas only – living room, bedroom. Not for bathrooms. |
| R10 | Moderate grip | Powder room, basin area, kitchen floor |
| R11 | Good grip | Main bathroom floor and shower area – a safe choice for most homes |
| R12 and above | Very strong grip | Shower floors for elderly family members, outdoor areas, ramps |
Not every tile box in the market shows the R-value. If it is printed, prefer R10 or R11 for a normal bathroom and R12 for an elderly-friendly bathroom. If it is not printed, do the simple palm test – rub your dry palm, then your wet palm, across the tile surface. If it feels grabby and not skating-rink smooth, it is acceptable.
Best tile size for bathroom floors
Bigger is not better inside a bathroom. Large tiles mean fewer grout lines, but grout lines actually help your foot grip the floor. Also, a large tile needs to be cut more around the drain, the shower seat and the walls, which wastes material.
- Small tiles (under 8×8 inches): Many grout lines, very good grip, easy to slope towards the drain. Best for shower floors.
- Medium tiles (12×12 to 16×16 inches): The sweet spot for most Indian bathrooms. Good balance of grip, look and easy laying.
- Large tiles (24×24 inches and above): Fewer joints and a clean look, but fewer grip lines. Fine for a large, dry bathroom. Avoid in the shower area.
One practical tip: whatever size you buy, order about 30 percent extra for wastage and future repairs. Cut pieces break, shade lots differ, and matching a tile five years later is very difficult.
Tile fixing rates in Greater Noida
The tile itself is one cost. Fixing it properly is another. At Aarna Constructions & Interiors, our labour rates for bathroom tile work are:
- Tile fixing with cement: Rs 70 per sq ft
- Tile fixing with tile adhesive: Rs 80, Rs 100 or Rs 140 per sq ft, depending on the grade of adhesive
- Demolition of old tiles and plaster before new work: Rs 20 per sq ft
- Wall plastering after demolition: Rs 50 per sq ft
- Waterproofing of the floor plus 3 ft up the walls: Rs 70 per sq ft
Is adhesive worth it over plain cement? For bathroom floors, yes. Adhesive bonds the tile firmly, holds up against constant moisture, and reduces the chance of hollow or loose tiles later. Cement fixing is fine for dry rooms, but in a wet bathroom, a good adhesive is money well spent.
These are labour rates only. The price of the tiles themselves varies a lot by brand, finish and size, so we do not quote it blindly. If you want a full item-by-item estimate for your own bathroom, use our free washroom renovation cost calculator. It lists every work item so nothing is hidden. The final quotation is confirmed after a site visit, and GST is extra.
Tile options for elderly-friendly bathrooms
If an elderly parent or a family member with weak joints uses the bathroom, plan the floor with extra care. Falls in bathrooms are a serious matter at that age. Here is a checklist you can tick off:
- Floor tile with R11 grip or better, or a clearly textured anti-skid tile
- Small or medium tile size in the shower area, with proper slope towards the drain so water never pools
- Matt finish throughout – no glossy tile anywhere on the floor
- Contrasting grout lines so the floor edges and levels are easy to see
- Grab bars near the commode and inside the shower
- A strip drain or large drain cover so water clears quickly
- Good lighting – a well-lit floor is a safer floor
- A seat in the shower if the person cannot stand long
Related work we handle in these bathrooms includes plumbing rework (Rs 12,000 to Rs 38,000 for a washroom, by tier), electrical wiring (Rs 10,000), and a concrete seat in the shower (Rs 2,000 per running ft). Cleaning and maintenance comparison
Safety and cleaning pull in opposite directions. The safest tile is the hardest to clean, and the easiest tile to clean is the most slippery. Here is the honest comparison:
| Tile finish | Grip when wet | Ease of cleaning | Best spot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Glossy | Poor | Very easy – a wipe is enough | Walls, living areas. Never bathroom floors. |
| Matte | Moderate | Easy | Basin area, powder room floor, bathroom walls |
| Anti-skid / textured | Very good | Needs a soft brush and floor cleaner | Main bathroom floor, shower floor |
A few plain cleaning tips that work for all finishes:
- Sweep or wipe the floor every day. Soap build-up makes even a good anti-skid tile slippery.
- Use a neutral pH floor cleaner or plain soap water. Strong acid cleaners damage grout over time.
- Clean the grout lines once a week with a soft brush.
- Keep the exhaust fan running during and after baths. Less moisture means less slippery film and less mould.
- Mop the shower floor dry at night in homes with elderly members. Ten seconds of work, a lot of safety gained.
A quick way to decide
If you remember nothing else, remember this: for the shower floor, choose a small or medium textured anti-skid tile. For the general bathroom floor, a medium matte or anti-skid tile works well. Save the glossy tiles for the walls. Walls can be shiny because you do not walk on them.

Frequently Asked Questions
Matte tiles are less slippery than glossy tiles, but they are not fully non-slip. A true anti-skid or textured tile gives better grip on a wet floor. Use matte tiles for basin areas and powder rooms, and anti-skid tiles for the shower and main bathroom floor.
For a small bathroom, 12x12 inch tiles are a safe and practical choice. They give enough grip lines, they are easy to slope towards the drain, and there is less cutting waste than with large tiles. For the shower floor, smaller tiles work even better.
For bathroom floors, tile adhesive is the better choice. It bonds strongly, handles constant moisture well, and reduces the chance of loose or hollow tiles. Cement fixing costs less and is fine for dry rooms, but in a wet bathroom the adhesive is worth the extra spend.
Buy about 30 percent extra over the measured area. This covers breakage during cutting, damaged pieces, and future repairs. Matching the same shade later is often difficult, so keep the extra boxes stored safely after the work is done.
